Didihat Travel Guide: How to Reach Hat Tharp, Where to Stay & Getting Around
A practical, lovingly detailed guide on how to reach Hat Tharp and Didihat in Pithoragarh — by road, rail and air — with where to stay, travel times and the best routes through the Kumaon Himalaya.
If you are wondering how to reach Hat Tharp and Didihat, the honest answer is that the journey is part of the reward. This little village sits about 2 kilometres from Didihat town in Pithoragarh district, high in the Kumaon Himalaya of Uttarakhand — close enough to civilisation to be reachable, remote enough to still feel like a discovery. This travel guide walks you through every realistic way to get here, where to stay, and how to plan your days.
Where exactly is Hat Tharp?
Hat Tharp is a Gram Panchayat in the Didihat block of Pithoragarh, perched at an average altitude of roughly 1,725 metres. It is the very settlement that gave Didihat its name — Dand (hillock) and Hat (market) — and it overlooks the fertile Haat Valley, the Charma river and, on a clear day, the snow wall of the Panchachuli peaks.
The district headquarters at Pithoragarh is about 53 km away, and Didihat town — with its shops, ATMs and bus stand — is a 2 km hop from the village.
By road — the main and most scenic way
Almost everyone reaches Hat Tharp by road, and the drive through the Kumaon hills is unforgettable.
- From Delhi (~530 km): An overnight journey. Most travellers drive or take a bus to Haldwani/Kathgodam first, then continue into the hills.
- From Haldwani/Kathgodam (~230 km): This is the real gateway to Kumaon. Shared taxis and Uttarakhand Roadways buses run via Almora and Pithoragarh towards Didihat.
- From Pithoragarh (~53 km): Frequent buses and shared jeeps connect Pithoragarh to Didihat through some of the prettiest ridgelines in the district.
Once in Didihat, the final 2 km to Hat Tharp is a short taxi ride or a pleasant walk.

By train — the nearest railheads
There is no railway line into the high hills, so you will finish the last leg by road.
- Tanakpur (~150 km): The nearest convenient railhead for the eastern Kumaon route.
- Kathgodam (~230 km): The best-connected railhead in the region, with direct trains from Delhi, Lucknow and beyond. From here, hill taxis and buses take over.
By air — the nearest airports
- Pantnagar Airport (~250 km): The nearest commercial airport, with limited flights; from there it is a full day's drive.
- Pithoragarh (Naini Saini) airstrip: Much closer, but services are limited and weather-dependent. Check current operations before planning around it.
Getting around once you arrive
Hat Tharp and Didihat are best explored slowly and on foot. The village, the Sirakot trail, the terraced fields and the Charma river are all within easy walking distance. For longer hops to nearby attractions, shared jeeps and local taxis from Didihat are the norm.
Where to stay
Didihat town (2 km) is your practical base, with guesthouses and small homestays. Across the wider region you will also find government rest houses. For a deeper experience, village homestays and guided heritage walks can be arranged through the Hat Tharp Gram Panchayat — a chance to wake up to mountain air, eat hand-grown food, and hear the village's stories first-hand.
A word on altitude, roads and safety
The Kumaon hills are gentle to those who respect them. Roads are mountain roads — drive in daylight, keep a buffer in your schedule, and avoid the peak monsoon weeks (July–August) when landslides can briefly block routes. The region lies in seismic zone 5, so local construction is increasingly built with that in mind. None of this should deter you; it is simply the honest context of Himalayan travel.
